An abstract is a short summary of your completed research. It is intended to describe your work without going into great detail. Abstracts should be self-contained and concise, explaining your work as briefly and clearly as possible.
As a summary of a three-page paper, your abstact should be no more than 100-150 words, and contain the following:
- States the problem (your research question).
- States your solution (your argument).
- Concisely states the sub-arguments, method, and source(s).
An outline is a helpful guide or organizing your paper. Outlines give a visual structure to your work and are used to show relationships and hierarchies within your content. To outline, you must create a linear, organized plan for your paper that shows the main ideas that you will discuss as well as their relationships within the paper. It should organize all of the components of your thesis (i.e., your argument), including the introduction, the body (sub-arguments, major and minor points), and the conclusion. Be sure to include an informative title.
